Why 6 Gears Are (Usually) Better for a Jeep
In a 6-gear setup, the workload is distributed across more surface area. For a Jeep JL—which is heavy and often modified—the 6-gear version is generally the "gold standard."
1. Higher Torque Bias Ratio
The primary benefit of adding more helical gears is the Bias Ratio. A 6-gear LSD can "multiply" the torque to the wheel with traction more effectively than a 4-gear unit. If one tire is in the mud, the 6-gear unit does a better job of tricking the differential into sending power to the tire on solid ground.
2. Load Distribution & Strength
Jeeps face high "

shock loads" (like when a tire spins and then suddenly grabs a rock).
 * In a 4-gear unit, that force is split four ways.
 * In a 6-gear unit, it’s split six ways.
   This reduces the stress on each individual gear tooth, making it much less likely that you'll "grenade" your diff when the trail gets spicy.
3. Heat Management
More gears mean more surface area to dissipate heat. If you are doing long stretches of sand driving or high-speed desert running where the LSD is constantly working, the 6-gear unit will stay cooler and last longer.
Which one should you choose?
 * Go with the 4-gear if: You have a stock Sport or Sahara, you mostly stay on pavement or gravel, and you want to save a bit of cash. It’s still a massive upgrade over an open differential.
 * Go with the 6-gear if: You’re running 35" tires or larger, you plan on hitting "moderate to difficult" trails, or you use your Jeep for towing. The peace of mind and extra bite are well worth the price jump.
